Load-in started at 6:00 AM. by 5:00 that evening, we were set and ready to do the show in front of 12,000 people in one of the most well-known and well-loved theaters in the world. John Mulaney brought the gang back together from Oh Hello on Broadway so we could turn the final stop on his year-long Kid Gorgeous Tour into a something that looked downright spectacular and really raised the bar on stand-up comedy production values. The set design (by Scott Pask) and the lighting design did just that, filing the 100-foot wide proscenium with a series of luscious Austrian-style curtains that meshed so beautifully with the existing design and architecture of the hall that you would almost think the set was a permanent feature. Each layer of drape was individually lit with color-changing LEDs allowing for a huge array of stunning looks. While most stand-up specials stick to one static look, we couldn’t possibly pick our favorite, so we transitioned through 4 distinct backgrounds throughout John set.
