1951: The army was desegregated, hydrogen bombs were just going into testing, and the world was crashing down around the allegedly deranged Johann Christian Woyzeck. As we brought Büchner
’s play into a new time period and framed it with a new english translation of the german report which analyzed the real man’s psychosis, the lighting design directed all the pressures and forces of the world against the central character. While most of the play floated through his mind, pockets of naturalism and flashes of intense color dotted the otherwise industrial and gloomy landscape.
